Anticline Collective is a temporary artist collective in the Gorge — a real storefront, movable walls, and a crew of local artists showing work made here, about here, and about everything else. When the popups call, we roll out. When a tenant signs, we fold up. That's the deal, and we like it.
Everyone in the Gorge calls Coyote Wall "the Syncline." One problem: it's an anticline.
The great wall of basalt above Bingen is folded rock pushed up — geologists call it the Bingen Anticline. The actual syncline, the downfold, sits under the Columbia River where nobody rides bikes. The nickname stuck anyway, and locals have argued about it in parking lots ever since.
We're named for the thing everybody sees and nobody calls by its right name. Pressure from all sides, folded, uplifted — still standing. If that's not a Gorge artist, what is?
A gallery with wheels under everything and no illusions about permanence.
No monthly nut hanging over anybody. When work sells, the space and the collective take a cut. Sell nothing, owe nothing. Final split is being worked out — join the conversation and help shape it.
Walls, panels, and display fixtures that break down and load into a truck. The same kit that fills the storefront works a First Friday in the Gorge or a Last Thursday on Alberta.
The salon and esthetician who share the building keep the doors open and eyes on the work daily — and earn commission for it. Artists make art; stewards mind the floor.
The space is ours until a long-term tenant signs. Security cameras are going in, and we're sorting coverage for work on display. Everything is built to survive a move — including the name.
Gorge people, not just Gorge landscapes.
Some of the work is about this place. A lot of it isn't — it's just made by people who live here. Both belong on the wall.
This thing gets shaped by whoever shows up early.
